With the Olympics just around the corner, excitement for a summer of athletics is growing. And last Tuesday, that excitement was very evident as our Prep boys took to the track and field to compete for their Houses.

In a slight change from usual, boys from Y3 to Y6 competed in the morning, while our Y8 boys, fresh from House Drama, competed in the afternoon to safely maintain year group bubbles.

The track was busy with sprints from 60m up to 300m, the middle-distance races of 600m and 800m were highly anticipated, and the relays at Y7 and Y8 were fiercely contested with several close finishes. However, the staff 4 x 100m team reminded our talented Y8s that they still have a way to go!

Head of Games, Mr Phillips, proudly told us, “Every boy who ran gave of their best, trying to score points for their House, whilst proving that they could win or lose with grace. What a great display by all involved.”

The field events were equally enjoyed, with the long jump proving very popular, having up to 36 competitors in some age groups. Maybe the next Mike Powell (world record holder at 8.95m) will come from this!

After 117 events, just 62 points separated the overall first and fourth places, which shows the determination of each boy to do well.

Congratulations to Whitbread House on their victory this year.

  • 1st – Whitbread
  • 2nd – Bunyan
  • 3rd – Howard
  • 4th – Harpur

We were also delighted to be joined by Mrs Oakley, who summed up the day quite brilliantly:

“It was truly tremendous to finally feel the buzz of the House after such a long absence. Golly, how I have missed that! It sent tingles down my spine hearing the roar of the boys cheering on their Houses and brought the biggest smile to my face. It was made all the more special by the way the events were organised, the boys thoroughly enjoying the events they had chosen and well . . . it was just magic – so thank you. A very much-needed high to end the year on.”
