Summer Adventures

Summer Adventures

From cathedral choirs to conservation in Mexico, volunteering in Malawi to sporting excellence in South Africa, our boys embraced a summer full of unforgettable experiences, personal growth and global exploration.

Chapel Choir Tour to Gloucester

The Chapel Choir enjoyed a truly unforgettable summer tour to Gloucester, continuing a proud tradition of musical excellence that spans centuries. This year, the choir was invited to sing daily services at Gloucester Cathedral, stepping into the role of the resident cathedral choir and embracing the full experience of cathedral life. From daily Evensongs to a Sunday morning Eucharist, the choristers rose to the challenge with dedication and joy.

The group stayed at Cheltenham Ladies’ College in a Sixth Form boarding house, with rehearsals both at the college—right next to the famously silent Marble Corridor—and in the awe-inspiring setting of Gloucester Cathedral. In between rehearsals and services, the boys enjoyed a packed schedule of fun and relaxation, including swimming, shopping, bowling, a high-energy afternoon on the high ropes at Go Ape and the ever-popular quiz night.

This tour was not only a musical highlight but also a chance for the choir to grow as a team, build lasting friendships, and create memories that will stay with them for years to come.

Volunteering in Malawi

Thirteen boys from the Fifth Form to Upper Sixth spent part of their summer in rural Malawi, taking part in a unique volunteering and cultural experience. From leading sports sessions and visiting schools, to supporting medical outreach and special education centres, they immersed themselves in village life, making a meaningful impact on those around them.

They met a village chief, explored local markets and even spent a night in the bush sharing space with monkeys, elephants and crocodiles!

It was a challenging yet deeply rewarding experience, where kindness, resilience and teamwork shone through. Friendships were formed, perspectives broadened and memories made that will last a lifetime. Boys have described it as “literally the best thing I have done in my life” and “life changing”.

Exploring Mexico’s Biodiversity

Among the many far-reaching adventures enjoyed by our boys this summer, one standout was the Biology Expedition to Mexico, where 16 pupils and three staff members embarked on an unforgettable journey.

Week one took them deep into the Calamuk Biosphere, where they conducted vital research, surveying birds, bats, reptiles, butterflies and more. Their data contributes to a long-term project monitoring the region’s biodiversity. A visit to nearby Mayan ruins added a fascinating cultural layer to the experience.

Week two shifted to the coast in Akumal Bay, home to the endangered Green Turtle. Boys took part in marine research, snorkelling, completing PADI Open Water courses and studying reef ecology—all while learning about conservation efforts in the protected bay.

Memories Made in South Africa

As we continue to reflect on our summer adventures, the unforgettable South Africa 2025 tour deserves a special spotlight. Over 90 boys from our U16 and U18 rugby and hockey teams embarked on an unforgettable summer tour to South Africa—a journey packed with sport, adventure and cultural discovery.

They took part in three sets of competitive fixtures against top local schools, a chance to showcase their skill and sportsmanship. Beyond the pitches, the boys embraced every moment—from ziplining and powerboating to exploring the iconic Table Mountain, Boulders Beach and the vibrant Langa Township.

The tour concluded with a breathtaking safari at Aquila Game Reserve, where they spotted four of the ‘Big Five’—the perfect finale to a trip filled with lifelong memories.
