If you are thinking about joining our Sixth Form, boarding here gives you the space, support and freedom to make the most of your final school years.

Fortune World Leading Boarding School

Bedford School is proud to have been recently named among Fortune’s ‘World’s Leading Boarding Schools’. We were awarded five stars, placing us not just in the top 250 schools covered by the report, but in the global top 100 making us one of just six boys’ boarding schools in the world to have achieved such a rating.

Building Character

Boarding at Bedford is not just about where you sleep—it is about how you grow. Our recent research shows how boarding helps boys thrive academically, socially and personally, both at school and beyond. It brings the school to life, with energy that never really stops. In your house, routines take shape, friendships deepen, and you find a sense of belonging and purpose that stays with you.

Academic Support that Works for You

Whether you are revising for exams or exploring new ideas, boarding gives you more daily access to teachers who can help. Evening prep (homework) sessions are focused and productive, and extra talks and workshops stretch your thinking. You will find it easier to stay on track—and push yourself further.

More Time, More Freedom

Without the daily commute, you have more time to do what you enjoy. Join clubs, play sport, relax with friends, or try something new—like laser tag, go-karting or music nights. You will shape your own routine within the structure of the boarding day, building independence and confidence.

Growing as a Person

Boarding helps you learn how to manage your time, live with others, and take responsibility. You will be part of a diverse community, gaining life skills and a broader outlook. Many boys say they become more organised, thoughtful and self-reliant—qualities that stay with you. You will also have opportunities to take on leadership roles within your house, mentoring younger boarders and helping shape the community around you.

When the time comes to leave the house, the friendships you have built there will give you a ready-made global network to keep you connected, wherever life takes you.

Ready for What Comes Next

Sixth Form boarders leave Bedford ready for university life. You will already be used to living independently, balancing work and downtime, and managing your own schedule. Boarding gives you a “soft start” to adulthood—with support when you need it, and space to grow.

Staying Connected

Boarding doesn’t mean losing touch with home. You will always be in contact your family, and they are welcome to visit whenever they like. Your Housemaster and Matron help keep that connection strong—making sure you feel supported both at school and at home. For families with busy lives or frequent moves, boarding offers stability and helps make the time you spend together more relaxed and enjoyable.

Focused, Together

Being part of a house means more than just sharing space—it gives you a real sense of belonging. When everyone around you is focused and working hard, it pushes you to do the same. You build good habits, learn to respect others, and support each other through challenges. Over time, you form strong friendships based on teamwork, ambition and shared goals—and those connections will last well beyond school.

The Options

We offer three options for boarding, as well as occasional boarding, which is bookable on an ad hoc basis, subject to availability:

Full Boarding

Stay at school all week and weekends, heading home during holidays.

Weekly Boarding

Stay during the week, then head home after Saturday sport. Return Sunday evening or Monday morning.

Flexi Boarding

Stay for two, three or four nights a week, every week during term-time.

Importantly, whatever option you choose, you will be a full member of your house—with the same Housemaster, Tutor and access to the house at all times. This consistency will help you to build strong friendships and a real sense of belonging.

“You don’t learn it, you live it.”

“All [Boarding Houses] are converted houses and feel homely – no resemblance to a Travelodge here. Masses of common rooms and outside space means there is an easy feel to them, and the pupils are well looked after by a housemaster, deputy, matron and tutors.”

Talk Education

More Home Than House

Each boarding house has around fifty boys, creating a close-knit community. You will get to know your Housemaster, Assistant Housemaster, Tutors and Matron well—they are there to support you, listen, and help you succeed.

Tutor groups meet before school, and staff are around every day if you want to chat about anything—school, life, or just how things are going. Your Housemaster also keeps in touch with your family, so everyone is on the same page.

Boarders often say their house feels like a second home. It is a place where you are known, supported, and encouraged to be yourself.

Weekend Life

Weekends at Bedford are a chance to relax and recharge. Sundays start slowly—with brunch and downtime—while evening Chapel offers space to reflect.

You will have access to the Fitness Centre, weights room and other school facilities, plus lots of activities such as cinema trips, water sports, local matches, and outings to London. Trips are organised based on feedback from boys and regularly include options such as visits to Bicester Village and Christmas shopping in Cambridge. Bedford town centre is just a short walk away, so you can grab food, shop, or chill with friends.

Weekends are yours to enjoy—with plenty of choice and freedom, all within a supportive environment.

Frequently Asked Questions

Before boys start at Bedford School, our Boarding Housemasters get in touch, usually on a Skype or a Teams call, to introduce themselves, and we warmly encourage parents to join this call. In the June ahead of starting, boys join us for an Induction Day. During the day, boys meet their Housemaster, house staff and some of the boys from the house in person. When boys first arrive at the boarding house, they are welcomed by senior boys, who also help them to settle in. Every new boy to the house also has a student buddy to help him to find his feet and get used to the new routines. During the first few weeks of term there are lots of house activities from Fourth Form trips to house competitions, which all help boys to feel a valued part of their house community.
