The Rugby Club enjoyed a high success rate at weekend with only three losses to Oakham in their fixture block.

The 1st XV showed a tremendous defensive display to withstand wave after wave of aggressive and direct Oakham attack.  Even though the visitors didn’t make it over the try line in the second half, and Bedford outscored them by two tries to one, two penalties to add to their first half converted try was enough for them to seal the win by a point.  Agonising but probably deserved and a few adjustments required in training.

Conversely, the 2nd XV won their tight contest, which was echoed by the 4th XV.  The 3rd XV show huge promise but couldn’t put it all together against a well organised Oakham team.  Sixth form spoils shared.

The U16 A-Cs all returned victorious but the U16As were made to work hard for their victory.  Some nice handling and use of the full width of the pitch led to some impressive scores where the whole team contributed.  The U16D faced a very well organised Berkhamsted C team.  The boys were up for the challenge and put in some tremendous tackles but were undone by a clearly more experienced team.  They will develop quickly if they consistently display these levels of determination.

The U15A continued their tough programme with a loss to a very strong Oakham team.  But the strength in depth for the remainder of the U15 teams was evident in the score lines.   Regardless of the heavy scoring the Bedford Boys still maintained their humility and respect towards the opposition.  It is worth noting the turnaround for the U15B team as they have already won more fixtures this season than they did last season, great work boys, keep it up!

The U14 A team had their first win of the season.  This was down to their hard work in the week correcting the mistakes from their previous fixture.  Oakham came back into contention but Bedford held firm this time and had the confidence to raise the intensity to close out the game.  The story was the same for the rest of the U14 teams as that of the U15.  Again, what was most pleasing was how the boys conducted themselves before, during and after the matches.  The U14 E team had all the play up at Merchant Taylors but couldn’t finish the many chances they made and ended with a narrow loss.  For many of these boys it was their first experience of rugby and their application to training and matches has been excellent.
