There was excitement in the air on Saturday as all U14 players made their debut for the school. Uppingham, who only this year moved U14 rugby to the autumn term, was an unknown quantity. However, there was no caution in the Bedford ranks as the teams couldn’t have had a better start to the season with a clean sweep of victories away from home. The boys are still getting to know one another in a rugby context but they seemed to gel incredibly well right from the off. The U14A team were particularly proactive in making sure they worked well as a unit by taking every opportunity in breaks of play to get together and seek ways to improve.
Back at Bedford, the U15 teams faired just as well with another run of wins. A good start to their campaign, they look like they will be a force to reckon with this season across the board.
The most pleasing performance of the weekend came from the U16A team who won with a gutsy performance in a thrilling match. The 50 points loss from the previous year would have been weighing heavily on their minds before the game and they should be proud of their achievement, a positive advertisement for hard work and resilience. The U16B and C team followed the trend. As a result, the day finished with much satisfaction. The U16D team were forced to work hard against a physical and well-organised St Albans U16C team. But Bedford ran out of steam in the 2nd half and leaked a few tries in what was otherwise a very tight contest.
The only result reversal in the Uppingham fixture was the 2nd XV, who were beaten by an organised team, controlled by two excellent half backs. The efforts of the 2nd team was hindered further by a stream of players going off through injury or being called onto the 1st XV pitch. The 1st XV, although faced with injury troubles, were comfortable winners, despite this not being reflected in the score line. A particularly good defensive display meant they were in control for much of the game and, had they managed to recycle the ball a little more cleanly, probably would have scored a few more tries. The 3rd, 4th and 5th XVs put on good performances and were rightly pleased with their results.
