Wellbeing
At Bedford Prep, we understand that growing up brings challenges—and we are here to support every boy’s wellbeing, confidence and sense of belonging, throughout his journey.
Supporting Boys
Boys’ formative years can bring challenges, and while we always aim for boys to learn and embed strategies for their own self-care and positive wellbeing through weekly personal development sessions, mentoring and a whole range of other opportunities, we also know that there are times when they may need extra support.
For boys who may need extra emotional or social support, we offer a wide range of support, including:
- Kick Start Club – every Monday morning, boys who find the transition from weekend to school tricky join us for hot chocolate, croissants and a positive start to the week.
- Forest School – Forest School helps boys who may be struggling to build confidence and friendships through hands-on, outdoor activities in our dedicated space, The Welly.
- Care of Animals Club – open to all, this calming and nurturing club is especially supportive for neurodivergent boys, offering meaningful time with our school animals to reduce anxiety and build social confidence.
- Dyslexia Workshops – every three weeks, boys in Years 7 and 8 with dyslexia come together to share experiences and develop practical strategies for learning, revision and exams.
- Young Carers Breakfast – each Tuesday, boys with caring responsibilities at home meet in a safe, supportive space to talk, connect, and feel understood.
- Reading Dog – Cocoa, our school reading dog, helps boys in Years 3 and 4 grow in reading confidence. Her calm presence also supports boys who need a little extra encouragement.
Nurturing Mental and Physical Health
We place the highest importance on boys’ physical and mental wellbeing. Our on-site Health and Wellbeing Centre, staffed by five dedicated nurses, provides professional, kind and compassionate care throughout the week. They are supported by local GPs who regularly visit the school.
We also offer a long-established counselling service, available five days a week. Boys can access this confidential support whenever they need it.
Spiritual Wellbeing and Reflection
Our school Chapel is a peaceful and inclusive space that plays a meaningful role in school life. Boys visit a couple of times each term to attend assemblies.
Rooted in the Christian tradition but welcoming to all faiths and none, the Chapel offers regular services, assemblies and space for quiet moments for reflection, with the Chaplain always available to offer pastoral support.
Fuel for Learning, Fun and Friendship
Mealtimes are more than just a break in the day—they are a chance for boys to come together, recharge and enjoy a shared sense of community. We know that food matters—especially for growing boys who, as we like to say, often run on their stomachs!
Our dining hall is a lively, welcoming space where boys refuel with a wide variety of healthy, tasty options that keep them energised for both learning and play.
