Life at Bedford

Prep School

For boys aged 7 to 13, each day brings new opportunities and new adventures in learning.

Whether in the classroom, on the sports field or in creative spaces, boys are encouraged to explore, ask questions and enjoy being part of a close-knit school community.

Our core values—endeavour, integrity, curiosity, responsibility and kindness—shape everything we do.

We focus on helping boys feel happy, confident and, when the time comes, ready for the seamless next step into the Upper School.

Bedford Prep School in Action

Starting and Sharing the Day

Each day at Bedford Prep begins with a warm welcome in morning registration and helps to build the strong connection between boys and their teachers.

Weekly assemblies bring the whole school together to celebrate achievements, share news and reflect on our core values. Assemblies often include guest speakers, music performed by the boys and talks that open up new ideas and perspectives.

Weekly year group assemblies focus on age-appropriate themes—from citizenship and current affairs to personal growth and learning habits—giving boys space to think, share and grow.

These shared moments help shape our strong, caring school community.

A Full and Balanced Week

Boys enjoy a full and exciting timetable of lessons, activities and sports each week. From Monday to Friday, the school day starts at 8:35am and finishes at 4:10pm, with wraparound care available both before and after school, offering flexibility for families.

As boys enter Year 6, they start to attend school on Saturday mornings. This slightly longer week allows them to explore a greater range of opportunities and helps to prepare them for the transition to the Upper School.

A Strong Sense of Belonging

Our Tutor Group and House systems are at the heart of school life. Class Teachers and Form Tutors build strong, trusting relationships with each boy, offering daily guidance and support. They are also the first point of contact for parents, helping to keep home and school closely connected.

Each boy belongs to one of four Houses—Bunyan, Harpur, Howard or Whitbread—where boys of all ages mix, mentor and compete.

From music and sport to fundraising and fun, the House system builds friendships, confidence and a strong sense of belonging.

Teaching Beyond the Classroom

Our staff are chosen not only for their ability to teach and inspire in the classroom, but also for their commitment to life beyond it.

We believe that the relationships formed between boys and teachers outside lessons are what make Bedford’s community so special. While our facilities are outstanding, it is the people—and the way they engage with the boys—that truly define the school.

With our deep understanding of boys, shaped by living and working alongside them, we know how to bring out the best in each individual. Above all, we want them to enjoy their time here—to love their childhood, because they only get it once.
