Into The Upper School
At Bedford Prep School, Years 7 and 8 are more than just a bridge—they are a launchpad. These final two years in the Prep School are carefully structured to ensure that every boy is fully prepared, academically, socially and emotionally for the transition to the Upper School at 13.
The Future Skills Curriculum
Our bespoke Future Skills Curriculum goes beyond the National Curriculum to equip them with the tools they need for success in school and life. It fosters:
- Independent thinking
- Creative problem-solving
- Emotional intelligence
- Digital literacy
- Collaboration and communication
This curriculum is tailored to how boys learn best, ensuring they are engaged, challenged and inspired every day.
.
Leadership and Responsibility
Being at the top of the Prep School gives boys the chance to lead. In Year 7, they begin to take on roles of responsibility, and by Year 8, many become Future Skills Ambassadors, mentoring younger pupils and modelling positive behaviour. These experiences build confidence, independence and a strong sense of self.
.
A Nurturing Environment
We understand boys—and we know how to support them through these formative years. Our approach nurtures:
- Mental health and wellbeing
- Physical and creative development
- Social confidence and resilience
This holistic support ensures that boys not only thrive now but are also ready to flourish in the Upper School and beyond. In fact, it is often said that giving boys this period at the top of the Prep School keeps them younger for longer, allowing them to make the most of all the opportunities they still have, and at the same time ensuring they are mature enough to move forward confidently into Year 9.
.
Seamless Progression to the Upper School
By the time boys move up to Year 9, they are not just ready—they are excited. They step into the Upper School with the skills, mindset, and maturity to make the most of every opportunity.
Whilst progression is seamless and boys are not required to sit an entrance test for the Upper School, as part of their preparation for transition, all boys sit the online Bedford School Assessment Test (BSAT) in December, alongside end-of-year exams. The results help identify any support needs. Boys who perform strongly in the BSAT may be invited to sit for a 13+ academic scholarship. Those who show talent in Art, Computer Science, Drama, Music or Sport (cricket, hockey, rowing, rugby or golf) can sit for a specific scholarship.
