The Old Bedfordians Cricket Club played their opening game of the season and warm up for the Cricketer Cup Competition on Sunday 7th June against Stony Stratford CC at the School, this is the second year running this fixture has been played and again Stony Stratford CC were ably captained by OB George Wood.

It was a warm sunny day and OB skipper Will Notley won the toss and elected to bat first. Notley and Will Aitkenhead had a good opening partnership and the OBs made quick headway. Notley lead the team from the front just as his boyhood hero and fellow OB Alastair Cook does, with a fantastic and entertaining captain’s innings of 84, including several sixes which he is not normally known for! All the other batsmen chipped in with Simon Lincoln hitting a blustery 40 down the order. This guided the OBs to a final total of 258 from their 45 overs.

Stony Stratford in reply started strongly making good use of the new ball, however once Simon Lincoln and Harry Aitkenhead found their lines wickets started to tumble and when the Stony Captain, normally a gun batsmen, was removed first ball, it was almost game set and match. A lower order defiant 68 by Stony’s number 8 almost gave the OBs a fright but some great controlled spin bowling from Guesty reapplied the pressure and Stony were eventually bowled out in the 44th over for 197. Congratulations to Simon Lincoln on finding his bowling form again picking up 4 wickets, just don’t ask him what happened in his second spell.

A good win for the OB CC, our next game is the Cricketer Cup First Round against Uppingham at Bedford School on Sunday 14th June with an 11.30am start.
