OB Club Annual Dinner 2024

OB Club Annual Dinner 2024

On Friday, 22nd November, OBs gathered to celebrate their ongoing relationship with the school at the annual OB Club Dinner. This year’s event was held at the prestigious One Great George Street, London, the home of the Institution of Civil Engineers, where guests enjoyed a fabulous three-course meal, plenty of wine, and some excellent speeches.

an evening of memories, laughter, and a celebration of the OB community.

Chairman of the Old Bedfordians Club, Oliver English (07–12), opened the evening with the loyal toast. He was followed by OB Club President Richard Northern (63–72), who welcomed guests and thanked the Old Bedfordians Club team for their hard work. Richard highlighted the club’s activities over the past year and shared exciting plans for 2025. He then introduced Acting HeadMaster Sam Baldock, who provided an update on Bedford School and expressed gratitude to the OB community for their ongoing support, particularly in light of the recent government decision to apply VAT to independent school fees.

This year’s guest speaker, Miles Young (63–72), delivered a fascinating and humorous account of his journey into the world of advertising and PR prior to becoming CEO of the international advertising agency Ogilvy & Mather. While much of his career was centred in China and North America, he shared that he returned to the UK in 2016 after being elected as the 48th Warden of New College, Oxford—the first businessman to hold this prestigious position. Miles concluded his speech by expressing his gratitude to Bedford School and the Old Bedfordians Club.

The speeches concluded with Head of School, Tanay Rai (16–25), saying grace:

“There are good ships, and there are wood ships, the ships that sail the sea.

But the best ships are friendships, and may they always be.”

The evening was followed by the cheerful sounds of guests reconnecting with old friends and making new ones. There was a fantastic atmosphere of friendship and camaraderie in the room.

The OB Club would like to thank everyone who attended and assure you that planning is already underway for next year’s event, which will be held at Bedford School on Saturday, 15th November 2025.

We look forward to welcoming you there!
