The Artist’s Life – Art Exhibition by Luke Martineau

Luke Martineau (b. 1970) trained at the Heatherley School of Fine Art in London, having studied as an undergraduate at Magdalen College, Oxford.
Luke has been painting professionally for 30 years, dividing his time between landscape and portrait work. His travels with easel and brushes have taken him from the banks of the river Barle on Exmoor to Cambodia and Hong Kong, from Venice to New York, and to India, where in 2010 he accompanied Their Royal Highnesses The Prince of Wales and The Duchess of Cornwall as official Tour Artist. He has work in many private and public collections, including Fishmongers Hall, the Hurlingham Club, Eton College, the Middle Temple and the Royal Collection. Luke was President of Chelsea Art Society from 2014 until 2022.
The Artist’s Life is both a retrospective trip through some highlights of Luke’s painting catalogue, and a celebration of his present subject matter and inspiration. The life of the artist is often thought to be synonymous with freedom from normal strictures, acted out in a bohemian world of dissolute pleasures! The reality is that discipline and hard work count for more than ‘talent’ and that it requires patience and determination to keep going for a lifetime. Luke will bring together works from his early years as a schoolboy at Eton College and travels after leaving school, to hang alongside portraits of key people in his life, as well as his William Nicholson-inspired children’s alphabet series and more recent oils of London, Exmoor and Bedford School itself.
