On Friday 7 June, our Y6 boys took their science classroom knowledge out to Ickwell for a day of fieldwork.
Tying in with their studies into animal life cycles, minibeast classification, ecosystems, food chains and food webs, and adaptations, the boys leapt at the chance to study minibeasts and flora up close.
During the day, the boys collected minibeasts to study through pond dipping and sweep netting before using microscopes and hand lenses to make accurate observational drawings. The boys then labelled their drawings and used them for minibeast identification and to look at their environmental adaptations.
The boys also used quadrats, which are gridded square frames, to focus their attention on a set area and accurately sample populations of plants and slow-moving animals.
