Time Travel, Hidden Black Histories and a Golden Bathtub

As part of Black History Month, our Year 5 and 6 boys enjoyed an exciting visit from Claire Linney, author of the Time Tub Travellers series.

Her talk gave the boys a powerful window to explore Black British history — from Tudor London to Victorian circuses — highlighting just a few of the stories that are often overlooked.

Claire spoke about her childhood, how she became a writer and why learning about Black history matters. Through her time-travelling tales, she introduced the boys to fascinating figures, including Reasonable Blackman, a Tudor silk weaver, and Pablo Fanque, a Victorian circus owner.

The boys were full of questions and left the talk with new knowledge, fresh inspiration and a real excitement to read Claire’s books.

“Amazing—I liked how she took her golden bathtub and put it into her book.” – Freddie, 5V

“I liked all the facts about the Tudors.” – Jude, 6L

“I liked all the facts about the Victorian circus.” – George, 6L

Claire’s visit was part of a wider programme of Black History Month activities. Over the past two weeks, boys have explored stories of historical heroes like Mary Seacole, Walter Tull, Mary Prince and John Blanke through House assemblies and tutor-time videos, followed by quizzes to deepen their understanding.
