Creativity, imagination and engineering skills were all tested when our Y5 boys joined with fellow pupils from Bedford Girls’ School for the hugely popular ‘Big Drop‘.
Their mission: to create a parachute and holder for their egg (hard-boiled) to ensure a gentle landing after dropping it from height.
Working in small teams, the boys and girls first devised their team names, and these were inspired and most egg-cellent. Some of our favourites included The Eggstreme, Eggylicious and the Eggstraordinary Eggsellent Eggs.
Equipped with a variety of materials, including straws, string, pencils, Sellotape, newspaper, a bin bag and scissors, the pupils had one hour to hatch their plans and ideas, refine their designs, and build their parachutes ahead of the ‘Big Drop‘.
There was infectious enthusiasm as the boys and girls worked together, showing brilliant creativity, collaboration, and perseverance.
It was then time to compete in the ‘Big Drop” from the balcony of the Erskine May Hall.
Aesthetics, speed (the slower the descent, the better) and the safety of the egg were all taken into account, along with how well the teams worked together.
This year’s deserving winners were the Eggcellent Eggmasters.
