Taking Learning to New Heights with the CCF

Taking Learning to New Heights with the CCF

Members of our Combined Cadet Force (CCF) enjoyed a series of unforgettable experiences recently, as RAF and Royal Navy cadets were given unique insights into military life.

Nine RAF cadets from Bedford School and Bedford Girls’ School travelled to RAF Wittering for an exhilarating flying experience that combined hands-on training with the thrill of taking to the skies. After completing basic parachute training, the cadets were issued with flight suits and helmets before heading to the aircraft for a 40-minute flight alongside professional RAF pilots.

The experience offered far more than simply being a passenger. Each cadet had the opportunity to take the controls and practise basic flying manoeuvres, gaining a real appreciation for the skill, concentration and discipline required of military aviators. To round off an unforgettable day, the pilots then demonstrated the aircraft’s capabilities with a series of exhilarating aerial manoeuvres, including barrel rolls and loops.

Meanwhile, our Royal Navy cadets were given a rare opportunity to visit HMS Prince of Wales while the aircraft carrier was in port. The visit provided a fascinating insight into life aboard one of the Royal Navy’s most advanced warships.

Cadets explored key areas of the vessel, including the bridge and vast flight deck, learning about the complex operations required to run a modern aircraft carrier. A particular highlight was the chance to get up close to one of the ship’s F-35 Lightning II fighter jets, seeing first-hand the technology and engineering that support the UK’s defence capabilities.

Experiences such as these are at the heart of the CCF programme. By stepping beyond the classroom, cadets develop confidence, resilience, teamwork and leadership skills while gaining exposure to career pathways and opportunities they might not otherwise encounter. Whether taking control of an aircraft or standing on the deck of one of the world’s most sophisticated warships, these experiences inspire young people to challenge themselves, broaden their horizons and grow in confidence.

The visits provided memories that will last a lifetime and demonstrated once again the unique opportunities available through our thriving CCF programme.
