Setting our Sights on the Future

Setting our Sights on the Future

One of the highlights of this year’s OB Sports Weekend was the official unveiling of the newly refurbished Rifle Range, a project only made possible through alumni generosity.

Having attended the annual shooting competition three years ago, Ian Gordon (58-68) was inspired to make a generous gift enabling full renovation of the range.

For those who remember the previous facility, the improvements are striking. Where once conditions could be challenging, particularly in colder months, the range is now both visually and thermally comfortable. A significantly enhanced spectator area also allows for a more engaging experience of the sport.

A unique aspect of the improvements is a state-of-the-art targeting system, which puts Bedford’s range among the most advanced school ranges in the country. Developed by the School’s Director of Digital Learning, Paul Scullion, this bespoke system enables shooters to see exactly where their shots land in real time, zoom in on specific areas of the target, and refine their technique accordingly. Spectators can also follow each shot as it happens, bringing a new level of viewer engagement.

Together, these enhancements will not only raise standards of performance but also enrich the experience for all who use the range.

Ian’s motivation goes beyond the aesthetic or technical advancements in this project. He wanted to support Bedford to ensure that it is at the forefront of school shooting, developing marksmen who can compete at the top level both nationally and internationally. In that sense, this refurbishment is about far more than the facility itself. It is about creating excellence and inspiring future talent.

The project reflects the long-standing vision of Peter Lumley-Wood, whose ambition has been to establish one of the best school shooting facilities in the country.

Ian’s decision to support the school in this way, unprompted and with such generosity, is a visible statement of belief in Bedford. It is a gift that will benefit generations of pupils, and one that we are proud to recognise as another act of philanthropy that improves what we are able to offer to current and future generations of boys.

We extend our sincere thanks to Ian for his kind generosity, to the innovation of Paul, Peter for his leadership and our Estates team for overseeing the project and making it happen. This is Bedford at its best: a community where OBs continue to invest in the experiences of those who follow them.
