In an inspiring visit, two Old Bedfordians recently returned to school to encourage current boys to aim for the prestigious universities of Oxford and Cambridge. OB Robert Menhart (17-22) and OB Reuben Glenville (20-22) are both reading Engineering at Cambridge University and visited to deliver a Physics Problems session, as well as give boys an opportunity to ask questions about studying at Cambridge.
Reuben and Robert began the session by answering questions. They shared valuable insights into the application process, their co-curricular activities at university and the steps they took during their school years to prepare for their applications. Their candid discussions provided boys with a realistic and relatable perspective on what it takes to succeed.
Upper Sixth Former, Jameson Liang said, “Reuben told me that in interviews it is often good to try different methods for each question, since the Professor would be more likely to remember me if I did that.
Another thing I learned from them is that I should prioritise entrance exams. Reuben told us that he won Top Gold in the BPhO challenge, which was very valuable to his application. This made me realise that I need to focus on my academic aspect primarily.”
Physics Problems
One of the highlights of the OB’s visit was a Physics Gym, where they presented the boys with challenging mechanics problems. These problems, which are part of the A-Level and IB courses, were tackled using alternative methods. The problem involving pendulums and springs was particularly impressive, showcasing not only their deep understanding of the subject but also their ability to communicate complex concepts with clarity and enthusiasm.
The visit also highlighted the importance of Old Bedfordians coming back to school. Seeing former pupils who have walked the same corridors and faced similar challenges now thriving at top universities is incredibly motivating for current students. It creates a tangible connection to their potential future and demonstrates that, with hard work and dedication, they too can achieve great things.

They have a shared experience, and for our boys, seeing the successes that boys just like them have had is so inspiring.”
