On Thursday 4 June, Old Bedfordian Emilio Gay (11-18) will walk out at Lord’s to make his England Test debut against New Zealand in the opening match of the summer – a proud moment for him, his family and the entire Bedford School community.  In doing so, he becomes the second Test opener from Bedford School this century, following in the footsteps of Old Bedfordian Sir Alastair Cook (98-03).

It is a landmark moment in a journey that began here at Bedford School. Now aged 26, Emilio Gay honed his skills and developed his early game at Bedford School and Bedford Cricket Club, before progressing through the county ranks with Northamptonshire and, most recently, Durham. His selection for England is the latest step in a career defined by dedication, resilience and a deep, enduring love of the game.

A Work Ethic Forged at Bedford

Those who watched Emilio’s development at close quarters speak consistently of his relentless commitment. At Bedford Cricket Club, it was not unusual for him to be found in the nets long after others had left, working meticulously on every aspect of his technique.

Most evenings, club members would walk through the gates to see him training, often alongside his father, Patrick, who has played a central role in his development. The hours were extraordinary, even on days already filled with training, Emilio would continue, ball after ball, constantly refining his approach. Coaches recall how he would analyse each shot, always striving to improve.

Bedford School Head Master James Hodgson reflected on that dedication, “I am so pleased for Emilio and his family, because there could not be a harder worker. If he wasn’t in the nets here at school, he would be down at Bedford Cricket Club, both before and after school all the way through the winter – there’d be snow on the ground and his father would have his car headlights on for light and throwing balls at him.”

That steely determination was evident from an early age. One standout moment came when, as a 13-year-old, Emilio helped Bedford School win the U17 national final at Cumnor Cricket Club. On that same day, he was presented with his 1st XI cap – a powerful early marker of both his talent and potential.

Talent and Drive

While his work ethic set him apart, Emilio’s natural enthusiasm for cricket has been just as defining. Coaches remember a player who not only loved batting but embraced every format and every challenge.

Will Montgomery, current teacher at Bedford School and one of Emilio’s former coaches told ITV News, “He would turn up for training, always with a bounce in his stride, lots of energy and really knew what he wanted.”

That passion extended beyond formal matches. From school tours overseas to informal backyard games, Emilio’s enjoyment of cricket has always been clear to see. Whether facing spin in unfamiliar conditions or taking on fast bowlers, he relished the opportunity to test himself, often raising his game against the strongest opposition.

He was also far more than a specialist batter. A capable bowler and an outstanding fielder, Emilio developed into a well-rounded cricketer, known for producing moments of brilliance in the field alongside his consistency with the bat.

A Memorable School Match

One story that perfectly captures Emilio’s character comes from Bedford School Sports Coach and Old Bedfordian Oli Hind, who shared memories of a remarkable two-day fixture against Tonbridge School in 2016.

Bedford found themselves in deep trouble after being bowled out for just 70, with Tonbridge, captained by Zak Crawley, responding with a total of over 300. Asked to bat again, Bedford faced a daunting task.

What followed was a display of resilience. Oli and Emilio shared a crucial partnership, occupying the crease for the majority of the second day. Emilio scored a superb 144, while Oli contributed 51, helping the team fight back with determination and composure.

Tonbridge eventually chased the target in quick time, but the match left a lasting impression. Their coach later described it as one of the best fixtures he had ever been part of — a testament to the quality and spirit on display.

It is an interesting footnote that Emilio now comes into the England side that has included Zak Crawley.

A Lasting Connection

Despite his rise through the professional game, Emilio has remained closely connected to Bedford. He regularly returns to school, supporting events and inspiring the next generation of cricketers. He continues to use the school nets when possible and has maintained strong relationships with coaches and staff.

There is immense pride in seeing him succeed — not only for his achievements on the field, but for the example he sets off it. His journey reflects the values of perseverance, integrity and passion that define the Bedford sporting community.

A Proud Moment for Bedford

As Emilio prepares to walk out at Lord’s, it marks a moment of collective pride for Bedford School, Bedford Cricket Club and the wider Bedford community. From long evenings in the nets to the biggest stage in world cricket, his story is one of unwavering commitment and belief.

Now, as another left-handed opener from Bedford follows in the footsteps of Sir Alastair Cook, all eyes will be on Lord’s this week.

We wish Emilio every success as he begins his England career – a richly deserved opportunity, earned through years of dedication, hard work and an enduring love of the game.
