There was great excitement in the school on Thursday due to the pitter-patter of some very tiny furry feet.
Boys and staff arrived at school to the news that two baby guinea pigs had been born overnight. To the surprise of many, the baby guinea pigs, also known as pups, were born fully developed with a full coat of fur.
With great care, calmness and hushed tones, boys and staff alike took great joy throughout the day to sneak a quick peek at the pups.
The two new additions to the Prep School’s animals join their mother, Andes, and ‘aunties’ Chile and Peru – all named after the Andes region of South America, where guinea pigs originate. In keeping with their origins, the new pups have been named Rainbow, after the region’s Rainbow Mountain, and Montaña, which is Spanish for mountain.
Although all new to the school, the guinea pigs are already firm favourites with many boys. Hugo told us, “Chile the guinea pig is my favourite. Whenever I pick Chile up, she goes to sleep. She is one of the cutest animals.”
Also new to the school is Lola, the leopard gecko. Unfortunately, she is a little camera-shy, so we still need photos of Lola.
However, with corn snakes, a tortoise, gerbils and a bearded dragon, to name a few, there are plenty of animals for boys to learn about and enjoy in Care of Animals Clubs, which will start again after half term.
