National Boarding Week has once again brought an added sense of energy and enjoyment to life in our Boarding Houses. A highlight in the calendar that gives our boarders something to look forward to after the intensity of exams. It is a chance to pause, celebrate the boarding experience and enjoy time together in a more relaxed and social way.
The week has already been packed with activity, beginning with the ever-popular Taste the World evening. The Dining Hall was transformed into a global showcase of flavours, with boys sampling dishes from across the world. From Cuban Mojo shrimp and ‘arroz chacinero’ to American-style fried chicken and sticky ribs, there was plenty to discover. Italian classics such as carbonara, arancini and antipasti proved equally popular, alongside English favourites including scampi and chips, and pie and mash. Desserts did not disappoint either, with Caribbean spiced cake, key lime pie and mini éclairs rounding off the evening. It was a fantastic opportunity for boys to try something new and experience different cultures through food.
Tuesday evening brought a more competitive edge, as boarders took to the main school field for Combat Archery. With Houses going head-to-head, the competition was taken very seriously, and there was no shortage of determination, teamwork and house pride on display. It was a lively and entertaining evening, enjoyed by all involved.
In contrast, film night offered a more relaxed pace. Boys gathered in the Erskine May Hall for a communal movie experience, complete with the essential treats of ice cream and popcorn. It provided a welcome chance to unwind, spend time with friends and simply enjoy being together at the end of a busy term.
Of course, the highlight of the week is still to come. With long summer evenings stretching ahead, preparations are building for the much-anticipated Boarders’ Games. Always a standout moment in the boarding calendar, it promises to bring the community together once again in a celebration of fun, camaraderie and friendly competition.
National Boarding Week continues to capture what makes boarding at Bedford School so special – a strong sense of community, shared experiences and the opportunity to make lasting memories beyond the classroom. Following weeks of hard work and focus, it is a chance for boys to relax, recharge and enjoy everything that boarding life has to offer with plenty more still to come.
