Match report: Prep School Parents vs Ousels – Sunday 7 June
Prep School Parents dodged the recent rain showers to take to the sports field last weekend for their annual cricket fixture against the teachers. Played in a friendly and spirited manner, the match was a tight affair with the Ousels narrowly coming out on top – thanks in part to the efforts of their Year 7 super-sub!
The teachers were asked to bat first in tricky conditions under grey skies. Good, disciplined lines from the parent bowlers, along with slow outfield, kept the scoring rate under five an over for much of the innings. An impressive, unbeaten 35 from Mr Hind added momentum in the final ten overs, allowing the Ousels to reach a competitive 151/9 from 30 overs.
In reply, the parents started strongly with a 50 opening partnership from Sumit and Varun. Contributions from Parik and Andy took the parents’ score passed 100 and a rare victory looked in sight. However, with Mr Silk limping from the field with muscle injury, Year 7 pupil Will stepped in, initially to ensure the fielding side were back up to 11. In a moment of sporting generosity, substitute Will was permitted to bowl and proceeded to run through the parents’ middle order, taking three wickets in four overs.
In a tight and nervy finish, the parents’ team were unable to secure the 23 runs needed from the last three overs. With regular wickets falling, backed up by tight fielding, the Ousels got over the line with a narrow, six-run victory. For the parents, another day of what might have been…
Most importantly, a good day was had by both players and spectators. A massive thank you must go to the volunteers from the Prep Guild who laid on a wonderful array of snacks and refreshments for those in attendance.
