We are delighted to share that Upper Sixth Former Koya has been awarded a prestigious Choral Scholarship at King’s College London, where he hopes to read Music.
Reflecting on the moment he received the news, Koya told us, “I felt really surprised and thankful that all the hard work I had put in was showing results. All my friends and family were happy for me, and I am really grateful for this opportunity.”
Koya’s musical journey has been one of commitment and a quiet determination. He joined Bedford School in the Fourth Form as a Music Scholar, having previously spent five years as a chorister at Jesus College, Cambridge, during his time at St John’s School. From the outset, he immersed himself in music life in school, particularly relishing the opportunity to sing in the Chapel Choir.
Over time, Koya’s passion for singing began to take centre stage. Although an accomplished instrumentalist, playing both the viola and tuba, it was during his GCSE years that he realised his true calling lay in vocal performance. By Lower Sixth, he had made the decision to focus his energy on singing, setting his sights on pursuing it beyond school.
He credits Bedford School with playing a key role in that journey. Through expert guidance and support, Koya has developed not only his vocal technique but also the confidence to find his own voice as a performer. Navigating a changing voice can be challenging for any young singer, but with encouragement from his teachers, Koya has honed both his skill and his individual style.
Looking ahead to university, Koya is excited to continue developing as a musician. While singing remains at the heart of his ambitions, “I really enjoy making sound for people to enjoy” – he is also eager to explore composition as part of his degree.
Beyond his musical achievements, Koya is determined to inspire others. He said he hopes to “be a beacon of hope so others like me can engage,” showing the kindness he has brought to his time at Bedford.
Koya is a wonderful role model for younger boys, demonstrating what can be achieved through dedication and a willingness to embrace opportunities. We congratulate him warmly on this outstanding achievement and look forward to following his continued success.
