Golf Team Crowned National Schools’ Scratch Champions 2024

Winning the prestigious HMC Schools Foursomes Championship in June was just the beginning for our school golf team, who went on to achieve even greater success by clinching the inaugural England Golf Schools’ Scratch Championships.

Upper Sixth Former Freddie Tucker captained the Bedford School team to victory and a second national title for 2024 at the world-famous Hotchkin Course at Woodhall Spa on 10 July.

Freddie and teammates Upper Sixth Former Jack Peters and Fifth Former Finlay Rennie achieved a team score of 2 under par (the best two scores from a team of three) to defeat Itchen College Golf Academy by one shot. Jack’s impressive score of 2 under par set the stage, and Finlay sealed the win with a birdie on the par-5 18th hole, thanks to a superb ‘up and down’ from the greenside bunker.

Jack explained, “It feels great to win the event following the success of the HMC Swifts finals, where the team produced history to win it for the first time. Then to follow it up with the win in the brand-new Schools’ Scratch Team Championship was a really lovely send-off, especially for Freddie and myself, where we spent five years at Bedford School competing at the highest level.”

Jack credits a great deal of their success down to the incredible facilities afforded to them while at school, as well as their teachers and coaches. He went on to say. “I think credit must also go to Woburn Golf Club in offering the school some of the best practice facilities in the country, and inevitably, this is going to help progress the team further and give the team a greater advantage in the very high-stake matches or tournaments. I think, most importantly, the team has bonded so well this year, and the success of the team has come down to the hard work on and off the course and the support we give to each player and the organisation behind the scenes that gives the team the best opportunity to excel in competitions such as this one.”

Both Jack and Freddie will continue their golfing careers while studying at US universities after receiving unconditional scholarship offers. Jack will study Business Management at Keiser University in West Palm Beach, Florida, while Freddie will study Business at the PaPenta School of Business in New Rochelle, New York.

Jack explained, “I am very excited to start my new chapter in my life and move to Florida to play college golf at Keiser University. I believe it is a massive opportunity for me to excel while also developing hugely to, hopefully, reach my end goal of being a professional golfer and, ultimately, the best player in the world.”
