With the 10th anniversary of the opening of The Quarry Theatre at St Luke’s this year, we take a look at drama and theatre at the school before 2015. Until 1981, most of the school plays were performed in the Great Hall until, as part of the restoration after the1979 fire, a dedicated theatre was opened in the Recreational Centre. There it remained until the opening of The Quarry Theatre in 2015. This Ousel article from 1991 describes the new facilities.
At last, however, it really is possible to look forward to using the building properly and fully. The Theatre will seat 282 people, and retractable tiered seating will make several varieties of staging available. Behind the proscenium arch the stage is large enough to take two sets, one in performance and the other in rehearsal. There are catwalks above the stage, giving access to the lights and flies, and workshop and storage space at the rear.
