On Friday 6 June, our Year 6 boys swapped the classroom for the great outdoors, heading to Ickwell—our beautiful nature conservation reserve—for a hands-on day of scientific discovery.
The boys immersed themselves in the world of minibeasts and local flora. Armed with sweep nets and pond-dipping kits, they collected a variety of tiny creatures, observing them closely with microscopes and hand lenses. Their detailed observational drawings, complete with labels, helped them identify species and explore how these fascinating organisms adapt to their environments.
Later, the boys turned their attention to plant life. Using quadrats—gridded square frames—they carefully sampled specific areas to study plant populations and slow-moving animals. This methodical approach gave them a deeper understanding of biodiversity and ecological sampling techniques.
It was a day filled with exploration, discovery and a deeper appreciation for the natural world—bringing science to life in the most memorable way.
