This week has been an inspiring one for our GCSE drama boys and drama scholars, who had the privilege of attending a lecture and a specialist workshop that enriched their understanding and passion for the performing arts.
Professor Ben Poore from the University of York delivered a captivating lecture entitled An Echoing Chamber, focusing on the adaptation of Gothic n
ovels for the contemporary stage. His insights into the transformation of classic literature into modern theatrical productions left the boys thoroughly inspired and eager to explore these themes in their own work.
Adding to the excitement, we were delighted to welcome back Old Bedfordian Harun Ćehović (15-17) to run a specialist workshop for our drama scholars. The workshop, titled The Importance of Physicality on Stage – Exercises Inspired by Stanislavski, Grotowski, and Lecoq’s Approach, provided boys with hands-on experience of physical theatre techniques. Harun’s dynamic approach and practical exercises helped boys understand the significance of physicality in performance, drawing from the methodologies of renowned theatre practitioners.
During his time as an academic scholar at Bedford School, Harun had never really considered drama until a teacher introduced him to it. Reflecting on his journey, Harun shared, “It was thanks to the drama department and The Quarry Theatre that I became interested in acting and doing shows here. I had an offer from Kings College, London, to study Economics, but I decided to say no to that and go into drama instead. I would say that Bedford School was the main factor in discovering my love of drama – Bedford School really was a life-changer for me in every sense – it just gave me so many opportunities and allowed me to follow as many paths as I wanted. It was so generous and knowledge-giving in everything. Because I had not done drama before in my life, I saw this theatre and I thought, ‘maybe give it a go!’.”
Harun’s story is a testament to the transformative power of the arts and the support of his teachers while at school. His workshop provided valuable skills and inspired boys to pursue their passions with confidence.
