Tommy Barker, Lincoln Langley, Gurvir Sira, Jack Findlay and Seb Walker, all members of the school’s Debating Society, joined Harpur for their House assembly on Friday to give a showcase debate.
In their first official debate, the Y5 boys debated the motion: ‘This house believes that we should wear school uniforms’. With Seb chairing the debate, Tommy and Lincoln in Proposition and Gurvir and Jack in Opposition, the boys took to the floor with remarkable calmness and confidence.
The boys presented compelling points, articulating their ideas with conviction and, at times, humour to engage their audience. Their well-thought-out rebuttals and summaries further showcased their debating skills. Chaired by Seb, the boys also took questions from the attentive audience.
Mr Whitbread, Head of Harpur, was highly impressed by the boys’ composure and performance, especially considering it was their first debate in front of an audience. He awarded them the Harpur Mascot for the week—a significant honour, particularly for those not in Harpur House.
The boys are now looking forward to a debate with Bedford Modern School next term.
