Curriculum Collapse World Book Day

Curriculum Collapse World Book Day

We love books at Bedford Prep School, so we always look forward to World Book Day and celebrating the boys’ favourite stories and their love of reading.

This year, we combined World Book Day with our termly Curriculum Collapse Day for even more fun.

Throughout the day, boys swapped their usual lessons for a brilliant array of activities connected to reading, writing and grammar. Boys enjoyed sessions on:

  • designing creative and fun board games that help players practise their grammar skills
  • writing pitches for a national Silent Letter Day using as many words with silent letters as possible
  • exploring why punctuation matters, such as how a missing comma can have a disastrous effect on a sentence’s meaning
  • creating reading journeys, from books they enjoyed when they were very small up to today
  • having fun with homophones, including homophone bingo.

Comedy, singing, dancing, rap and rock music also all came together for a punctuation lesson like no other as we welcomed the ‘Punctuation Man’, otherwise known as Barrie McDermid, to the school.

During his two highly interactive and laugh-out-loud shows, the boys of all ages learned about everything from adjectives to clauses to semi-colons and more through catchy songs and quizzes.

The brilliant day left the boys buzzing, and we are pleased to say it is already inspiring them to be more attentive in their use of punctuation in their writing.

We also love competitions, and the boys took the day’s competitions very seriously! The boys pulled out the stops in the ‘Guess Who’s Reading’ competition, the ‘Extreme Reading’ photo competition and the much-loved ‘Form Costume’ competition.
