Over half term, a dedicated team of five Remove Form boys, Max, Arthur, Fin, Aarnav and Michael, travelled to Aston University to take part in the Formula 1 In Schools Challenge, marking the exciting culmination of many weeks of design, engineering, testing and preparation.
Designing, Building and Testing their Car
The team designed their own Bedford School-branded miniature Formula 1 car using professional Computer-Aided Design (CAD) software. They then manufactured the components using specialist equipment in the Design Technology department, before putting their creation through its paces in the Physics wind tunnel for aerodynamic testing.
Their commitment and teamwork was evident throughout the project. On competition day, the boys delivered a presentation explaining their engineering journey, answered technical questions from the judges, set up a display of their work and engaged with other teams. And of course, they competed in the all‑important racing element of the challenge.
A Strong First Year and Big Plans Ahead
This was the school’s first time entering the competition, and the boys gained valuable insight into the expectations, standards and innovations seen across the event. They returned with a wealth of ideas for how to develop their next entry, work that will begin in the summer term.
Max shared that the most valuable part of the experience was, “Experimenting and trying new things, especially the DT CAD software, learning how to use the different processes, and extending my knowledge in Physics and DT. My favourite part was making the car in DT — we used lots of different tools and machines.”
Aarnav added, “Max was on the manufacturing side and made the car. Fin and I were on the presentation and portfolio side, and we presented to the judges. We learned teamwork because we had to present altogether as a team.”
