On Saturday 4 July, there was a distinct atmosphere of camaraderie and reflection at Bedford School as Old Bedfordians, past parents and friends of the School gathered for the flagship summer event in the OB calendar – the At Home.
This year’s occasion was particularly poignant, marking the closure of Sanderson’s Boarding House and the relocation of Redburn to the Godber Building on de Parys Avenue. It was also Head Master James Hodgson’s final day at Bedford School before he takes up his new role as the founding Head Master of Brighton College Rome.
The day began with tours of the School, Sandersons and Redburn. It was wonderful to welcome so many people back to Bedford, including many who had not returned since leaving. The tours were filled with stories, memories and shared experiences, as former pupils reminisced about their time at School. There was a strong sense that, while Bedford School has introduced impressive new facilities such as the Golf Simulator, Quarry Theatre and the hugely popular strength and conditioning suite, it has retained the warmth, stability and sense of tradition that make it so special.
The Annual General Meeting was well attended, with members reflecting on another successful year for the Club. It was agreed that the OB Club continues to thrive, with a wide-ranging programme of events and strong engagement from across the global OB community.
The day culminated with 150 OBs and guests gathering in a marquee beside the Pavilion for a drinks reception and a delicious three-course lunch, while enjoying views of the Head Master’s Invitation XI versus the 1st XI cricket match. The Head Master’s Invitation XI team featured Emilio Gay (11-18) who recently opened for England in the recent Test Series vs New Zealand.
Grace was given by incoming Club President, Toby Lousada (72-81) before lunch was served. Outgoing Club President Richard Northern MBE (63–72) thanked guests for their continued support of the Club and formally welcomed Toby as his successor. This was followed by James Hodgson’s final speech as Head Master where he gave a toast to the Old Bedfordians Club, and expressed his gratitude to the OB community for its unwavering support throughout his time at Bedford School. It was a wonderful speech and we thank James for his support of the OB Club throughout his time as Head Master. We wish him well for his move to Italy.
It was wonderful to see so many people enjoying the day, reconnecting with old friends and telling tales of high jinx from their time at Bedford School. We were delighted to welcome both regular attendees and those making their first visit back to the School in many years. A special thank you also goes to those who travelled from overseas to join us.
We encourage all OBs to get involved in Club activities and to spread the word amongst fellow Old Bedfordians. Together, we can ensure that the spirit of the OB Club remains strong for generations to come.
