Armistice Day Assembly

Armistice Day Assembly

As autumn leaves drifted gently from the silver birch trees above, the school community gathered for this year’s Armistice Day assembly—a time for reflection and remembrance of those who left these grounds to fight in the great wars and never returned. Held on the Inky Pitch, the service brought everyone together in a shared act of honouring the sacrifice of the fallen.

All fell silent as members of our Combined Cadet Force (CCF) paraded their banner across the pitch, marking the solemn start of the service led by the Head Master and Mr Sanders.

Inside the Memorial Hall, the names of 756 Old Bedfordians who lost their lives in the two World Wars are inscribed—a permanent reminder of their sacrifice. Continuing our tradition, as 11 o’clock approached, the Head Master read aloud the names of some of these fallen Old Bedfordians – this year, family names beginning with ‘G’ and ‘H’.

Each name was accompanied by details of where they died, how and their age—many heartbreakingly young, just beyond their teenage years.

An extract from the poem For the Fallen was read before the eleventh hour, setting a tone of deep reflection. Then, as the haunting notes of The Last Post echoed around the Inky Pitch, the banner dipped and heads bowed for two minutes of silence. A moment of profound respect.

The silence ended as Major Peter Lumley-Wood spoke the enduring words,

“When you go home, tell them of us and say, For your tomorrow we gave our today.”
