Aarnav Braves the Elements for Cancer Research

In a heart-warming display of determination and compassion, Fourth Former Aarnav Varaganti recently became the youngest person to complete the Shine Night Walk half marathon raising over £3,300 for Cancer Research UK. Despite the torrential rain, Aarnav’s spirit shone brightly as he joined thousands of other participants in this annual event aimed at supporting life-saving cancer research.

The Shine Night Walk, known for its vibrant atmosphere and illuminated routes, took place across various cities in the UK, including London, Edinburgh and Cardiff. Participants had the option to walk 10k, a half marathon or a full marathon, with each step contributing to the fight against cancer.

Aarnav’s passion for charity work and endurance events was sparked when he started Bedford School. He found himself inspired by the school’s initiatives, such as Macmillan Cancer charity events and non-uniform days. These experiences, coupled with the park runs he completed with his Uncle Lenin, fostered a deep connection to running and walking for a cause.

The final stretch of the walk tested Aarnav’s resolve like never before. With 14 miles remaining, a torrential downpour began, making the journey even more challenging. Despite the heavy rain and the temptation to give up, Aarnav dug deep, summoning every ounce of determination to keep moving forward. For three relentless hours, he battled the elements, refusing to surrender to exhaustion or discomfort.

Aarnav told us after the walk, “What I enjoyed the most about the walk was the community I was surrounded by and that helped a lot during the tired and un-energetic times and also the happy and fun times. The views were incredible. It was basically a free tour around London, but it was chucking down with rain.”

Aarnav’s perseverance paid off as he completed the half marathon in an astounding six hours and 36 minutes. Starting at 9:40pm, he crossed the finish line in the early hours of the morning, drenched but triumphant.

Throughout his preperation, Aarnav received unwavering support from Director of Rugby, Mr Hinkins whose encouragement and recognition of Aarnav’s extraordinary effort resonated deeply, inspiring not only Aarnav but also his classmates.

Aarnav’s mother told us, “School has played an instrumental role in fostering Aarnav’s drive. The school’s charitable efforts, such as non-uniform days and Macmillan coffee mornings, instilled in him a sense of purpose and a desire to give back.”

Congratulations, Aarnav, who is an inspiration to others, proving that age is no barrier to making a difference. Through his dedication and resilience, Aarnav has shown that every step, no matter how small, can contribute to a brighter, cancer-free future.
