The Head Master, James Hodgson, welcomed back to the school former Chair of Governors, Sir Clive Loader, and his wife, Lady Alison Loader. Alison, a keen embroiderer and tapestry creator, thought that she would like to do something for Bedford School following Clive’s retirement from the governing body in 2023. With the celebrations in 2027 marking the founding of the school 475 years ago in 1552, Alison decided to commemorate Sir William Harpur, whose benefaction in 1566, together with Dame Alice, played a pivotal role in the establishment and enduring success of Bedford School.
Alison’s detailed and intricate work took over a year to complete and was based on a miniature print that hangs on the wall in the OB office. The piece incorporates the school’s crest and current tagline, “That they be good men,” something no doubt Sir William himself would have been able to relate to.
Alison’s tapestry now stands as a beautiful and enduring tribute to Sir William Harpur’s vision and generosity. It not only honours the school’s rich heritage but also serves as a reminder of the values that continue to guide the school today. As we look ahead to the 475th anniversary celebrations, this amazing piece will hold pride of place, symbolising the deep connections between past, present, and future.
