Pride Across the Bedford Community as Emilio Gay Makes England Debut
There are some photos that capture far more than just a moment and for the Bedford School community, this photograph perfectly captures a special moment in the school’s sporting history.
Standing on the hallowed turf at Lord’s on Thursday 4 June 2026, Old Bedfordian Emilio Gay (11-18) received his England Test cap from fellow Old Bedfordian Sir Alastair Cook (98-03), England’s all-time leading Test run scorer and one of our most celebrated sporting Old Bedfordians. It is a powerful image: two left-handed opening batters from the same school, one handing the cap to another as Emilio prepared to take his place on cricket’s biggest stage.
Emilio’s selection for England marks the latest milestone in a journey that began at Bedford School, where his talent, work ethic and passion for the game quickly became apparent. Coaches have often spoken of the countless hours he spent honing his technique, whether at school or in the nets at Bedford Cricket Club long after others had finished training.
From helping Bedford School win the U17 National Final at just 13 years old to progressing through the county game with Northamptonshire and Durham, Emilio’s rise has been characterised by dedication and an unwavering commitment to improvement. Throughout it all, he has remained closely connected to Bedford, regularly returning to inspire current boys and support the next generation of players.

The significance of his England debut was felt across the Bedford community, with boys, staff, parents and Old Bedfordians following his progress with pride. Yet what followed made the occasion even more memorable.

Joined by his brother, fellow Old Bedfordian Simeon Gay (19-21), and watched by Sir Alastair Cook from the boundary, Emilio helped add another memorable chapter to one of the school’s most cherished cricketing traditions.
