On a breezy yet beautiful Sunday morning, the Bedford School community came together in a spirit of gratitude and celebration for this year’s Commemoration of the Founders and Benefactors Chapel Service and Lunch.
The occasion brought together donors, colleagues, Chapel Choir pupils and their families, along with friends from across the Bedford community. We were especially honoured to welcome back Old Bedfordian Colonel Anthony Abrahams (60-70), Deputy Lieutenant of Bedfordshire, and past parent Camilla King, High Sheriff, as our distinguished guests.
The morning began with warm conversation over coffee in the Recital Hall before guests made their way to the Chapel for a service that was uplifting and reflective. The Chapel rang with joyful singing and a shared sense of gratitude for all that Bedford School represents.
After the service, the celebration continued in the Great Hall with a delicious three-course lunch. Guests heard from Head Master, James Hodgson, who shared highlights of the school’s recent successes, including outstanding A Level and GCSE results. He reaffirmed Bedford’s commitment to serving the wider community through partnerships with local schools and organisations. In a year that has presented political challenges for Independent Schools, he reaffirmed Bedford’s determination to use its strengths to make a positive difference beyond the school gates.
Roger Marks (71-82), Chair of the Bedford School Foundation Trust, spoke passionately about the school’s enduring tradition of philanthropy. Drawing on stories from the Philanthropy Impact Report 2025, he illustrated how gifts of all sizes have helped shape the school’s journey, from facilities and bursaries to enrichment opportunities that touch every pupil’s experience.
Roger also paid tribute to James Hodgson’s remarkable leadership. As James prepares to step down at the end of this academic year after more than a decade at the helm, Roger reflected on the lasting legacy he leaves behind, one of vision, compassion, and unwavering dedication.
A highlight of the afternoon was the premiere of a short film (which you can see below) created by recent leaver and Bursary recipient Ra’ed Rizwan (18-25) and the Philanthropy team which featured heartfelt reflections from several supporters as to why they chose to give to Bedford. Their reasons varied, but all shared the same belief that investing in education is one of the most meaningful ways to make a lasting impact.
As the formalities drew to a close, guests lingered to share memories, laughter, and a deep sense of connection. It was a powerful reminder of the strength and warmth of the Bedford School community.
Bedford School extends its sincere thanks to everyone who joined this year’s celebration, particularly the Deputy Lieutenant and High Sheriff for their presence and kind support. We look forward to welcoming more friends and supporters next year.
