We are proud to welcome Mr Ian McGowan, our new Director of Sport, whose journey from Northern Ireland to the heart of Bedford reflects a deep commitment to sports education and the transformative power of physical activity.
After studying at Queen’s University Belfast, followed by a master’s degree at Loughborough University in Sports Coaching, Ian launched his career in North West London. His experience spans prestigious schools including Harrow School and Merchant Taylors’ School, where he spent 12 years in roles ranging from Head of Academic PE, Director of Cricket and latterly Assistant Head of the Middle School. Alongside qualifying as a teacher, he was also the youngest ever Northern Irish coach to achieve his ECB Level 4 coaching qualification, bringing a wealth of expertise to Bedford.
“I’ve had a modest playing career myself,” he admits with a smile, “but that’s exactly why I believe in the power of sport for everyone. Our role is about helping boys fall in love with being physically active, whatever their level. Success is when our boys want to continue being physically active long after they have left school.”
“What drew me here was the school’s reputation and its strong tradition of educating boys,” he explains. “I see real value in single-sex education, especially in how sport fits into that environment. Bedford has a genuinely rich sporting history, and I’m excited and proud to lead a talented department into its next chapter.”
Mr McGowan is also passionate about connecting past, present and future — helping boys not only thrive during their time at Bedford but also carry their experiences forward as Old Bedfordians. “Sport here isn’t just tradition — it’s a launchpad for lifelong engagement.”
Mr McGowan’s philosophy centres on the premise of boy first, athlete second. He reflects on the importance of appreciating individuality, protecting and growing confidence and education through sport. “It’s about understanding each boy — what motivates him, what challenges him — and using physical activity to facilitate learning and develop character. In my experience, boys respond best to positive reinforcement and praise. Confidence is key.”
His vision is clear:
“I want every boy to have the best possible experience of PE and Games here. That means having highly motivated, qualified staff and a meaningful programme that’s inclusive and inspiring across all levels of ability and interest.”
Mr McGowan went on to explain that he is committed to inspiring challenging, yet highly supportive learning environments. “Every boy has brilliance within him. Our job is to help him discover it — whether that’s on the rugby pitch, in the swimming pool or on the squash court.” Every sport matters. We’re here to make sure the experience across all disciplines is exceptional.”
“To parents considering Bedford School for their son, I would say this: we offer not only outstanding facilities and opportunities, but also a community of genuinely caring teachers and coaches who know the boys well. That’s rare. Our staff coach the games, understand the boys’ academic and personal lives, and support them holistically.”
He also praises the Parents’ Guild and the wider Bedford community saying, “Parents are part of the journey — from match-day teas to cheering on the sidelines. It’s that community feel that sets Bedford apart.”
Outside of work, sport continues to play a central role in Mr McGowan’s life. “I love playing golf, and cricket is my specialism — but really, I enjoy anything with a ball! Most of my friendships have come through sport, and that’s what I want for our boys too. He believes sport is as much about social connection as it is about competition. “Boys don’t always talk easily, but sport gives them a shared language. Whether they ‘go pro’ or just play for fun, the benefits are the same — confidence, friendship and lots and lots of memories.”
