Mr Rouse gave a fascinating talk on
the challenges of putting on a performance of Monteverdi’s Vespers to the
Adrian Boult Society, when they met for their
first lecture of the term on Friday 22 April 2016.

Based on his experiences of
conducting the work in 2015, he explained how such a piece benefits
from academic study in order to enliven and enrich a performance. The audience
were treated to explanations of historical instruments, the nature of
historical sources and the development of performance practices over time.
