Our Prep Headmaster, Ian Silk, shares his thoughts on how modern family life has transformed prep boarding and how Bedford Prep School has evolved to meet the needs of today’s families.
The last decade has seen significant changes to the way families work and live. With more dual career households, longer working days, an increase in after-school commitments for children and the ongoing pressure to balance wellbeing with academic success, family life now operates to a different rhythm to just ten years ago. Schools have been challenged to adapt, and boarding, in particular, has undergone a quiet but significant transformation.
At Bedford Prep School, we have seen firsthand how family needs have shifted. Increasingly parents are no longer always looking for the traditional, long-distance boarding experience of the past; instead, they welcome support, structure and flexibility that enhances home life rather than replaces it. At Bedford Prep School, we have evolved our boarding offer to meet this change.
Flexible Boarding for Today’s Families
Flexible boarding, once a niche, has become a popular choice for busy families. Parents increasingly seek:
- Supported, dedicated homework time
- reduced evening stress
- support with co-curricular commitments
- reassurance around digital habits and wellbeing
- more quality time together at home
To meet these needs, at Bedford Prep School we offer a range of options: full, weekly, flexi, occasional boarding and extended wraparound care until 7.30pm. This range means boarding is no longer an all or nothing decision. It is a tailored extension of family life.
A Boarding Community Designed for Boys to Thrive
Eagle House, our dedicated boarding prep boarding house, is a structured yet nurturing space where boys thrive. Where homework becomes calmer and more focused with teachers on hand to help each evening. Where activities are woven into daily life, giving boys the chance to pursue sport, music and friendships without the logistical strain many families face.
The result is simple: boys develop independence, resilience and strong friendships, while families experience less daily stress.
Try-Before-You-Board
One of the clearest trends in modern prep boarding is demand for ‘try-before-you-board’ experiences. Our sellout Fiesta Fridays and themed evenings are intentionally designed to help families (not just the boys) explore boarding in a joyful, relaxed way.
These try-before-you-buy events help our boys to build independence in small, supported steps and strengthen their friendships across the whole school community. And, when they are ready to take the next step, we offer families a choice of options to continue their boarding journey, both in the Prep School and into our Upper School.
Experience and Understanding
Leading the way in prep education relies on deep, lived understanding. Here at Bedford Prep School, Ed Loader brings exactly that; as do our teaching staff, including the four live‑in members of the team. As a former Eagle House boarder himself, a teacher, and now a housemaster, Ed has witnessed parents’ changing expectations year after year.
“Today’s families need boarding to work around them. When evenings become calmer, homework becomes clearer and friendships flourish, boys have a real advantage, academically, emotionally and socially.” Ed Loader, Housemaster
Looking Ahead
As we look to the next decade, it’s clear that boarding will continue to evolve. Families will increasingly look for even greater flexibility, more support and a school-home partnership that is forward-thinking, flexible and responsive.
As a school that is built around boarding, we are committed to leading that evolution, ensuring that boarding remains not just relevant, but hugely beneficial to modern family life. For many families, this is not about choosing between school and home; it is about creating the perfect balance of both.
