Some of our top mathematicians spent the afternoon at the Centre for Mathematical Sciences at the University of Cambridge competing in the UKMT Senior Maths Team Challenge on Tuesday 4 December.

The team was made up of Upper Sixth Formers Tom Pelling and Henry Shaw, and Lower Sixth Formers James Hooper and Samuel Evans. James and Sam met up with Tom and Henry in the afternoon as they had spent the morning being interviewed by the University of Cambridge as part of their degree application.

The team faced a variety of questions from algebra to geometry to number puzzles. Twenty-five schools took part, and the boys finished in third place – a mere two points behind the overall winners, just pipped to the post by the Perse School and the Stephen Perse Foundation Sixth Form. As a result of their great performance, there is a chance that they may be invited to the national final…watch this space!
