We were delighted to welcome Guardian Children’s Book Award winner and author of The Last Wild trilogy, Piers Torday, described as “The new master of books for children” by The Times, to the Prep School on Wednesday 14 June.

During the day Piers spent time with all boys, in all years!  Y3 and Y4 heard how Roald Dahl came to the bookshop Piers’ mother owned and wrote to him afterwards, which really inspired him to get writing and proved that even the greatest authors don’t get it right first time! He also showed the boys the letter from the famous author, which included a never before seen Oompa-Loompa song from Charlie and the Chocolate Factory.

Y 5 and Y6 boys were treated to a fact-filled presentation with animations and video, and Piers talked about the real life environmental challenges which inspired The Last Wild.

Y7 and Y8 learnt all about Piers’ journey to becoming an author, the pitfalls of writing his first novel and the inspiration behind his newest book ‘There May be a Castle’, of which they heard a short reading.

All in all, a fun-filled, imaginative and inspiring day!
