Making Waves at National Schools Regatta

The Bedford School Boat Club delivered an impressive performance at the National Schools Regatta at the end of last half term, fielding an impressive 11 crews across multiple age groups. Despite challenging conditions including strong winds and unpredictable water, the boys rose to the occasion with determination, skill and resilience.

A Historic Moment for the J14 A Crew

On the Friday, the J14 A, B and C octuples took to the water for their 1,000 metre races. The standout performance came from the J14 A crew, who delivered an exceptional time trial to finish sixth, earning a coveted place in the A final of the first octuples – a feat not achieved by the school since 2008.

Their final was not without drama. A crashing wave at 200 metres and a broken steering wire could have spelled disaster. However, thanks to the calm and quick thinking of the cox, the crew held their line and powered through to finish sixth in a fiercely competitive field. A remarkable achievement and a moment of pride for the entire school.

The J14 B and C crews also performed admirably, both reaching the D final of the second octuples event, finishing second and fourth respectively.

Saturday Success: 1st 8 Reaches A Final

Saturday brought even tougher conditions, with a strong headwind forcing a reshuffle of race times. Undeterred, the 1st 8 delivered an outstanding time trial, finishing sixth – one place ahead of Eton and securing a place in the A final for the first time since 2018. In the final, they held their own to finish sixth, just half a second behind Hampton, in a race that showcased their grit and cohesion.

Strong Performances Across the Board

  • The 2nd 8 placed 10th in their time trial and finished fourth in the B final, ahead of Latymer.
  • The 3rd 8 were fourth in their time trial, finishing fifth in the final after a close race with Eton.
  • The Colts A crew also reached the B final, finishing fourth, just one second behind Eton.
  • The Colts B narrowly missed the A final but bounced back to win their B final convincingly.
  • The J15 A crew earned the last spot in the B final, finishing sixth after a strong race.
  • The J15 B and C crews placed fourth in the C final and 19th overall, respectively.

Reaching the A finals in both the J14 and 1st 8 categories marks a significant milestone for the school’s rowing programme. It reflects not only the talent and hard work of the rowers but also the dedication of the coaching staff and the spirit of teamwork that defines the squad.
