Friday lunchtimes are full of lights, action and drama for boys in Y7 and Y8 who are part of the school’s Drama Tech Club. The fun club offers the boys a fantastic opportunity to explore all the elements of lighting and sound and backstage areas in an environment designed to allow them to access all areas, from the control booth right through to the lighting grid and rigs.

Throughout the term, the boys learn valuable technical skills and earn the opportunity to work as part of the technical team in the much-loved House Drama competition, which takes place in the spring term. Under the guidance of Mr Tearle, our theatre technician who runs the club, the boys learn how to create drama and atmosphere using the many tools at their fingertips.

Head of Drama in the Prep School, Mrs Turton told us, “I really enjoy hearing the boys speak about their experiences of Tech Club. Every week they return to their drama lessons or approach me on the playground to share their weekly stories. The most popular elements are operating the theatre disco ball and smoke machine! It’s a real joy to see boys taking an interest in all elements of theatre and gives boys, who are perhaps not keen performers, the confidence to still participate in theatre in some way and have a real sense of achievement that comes from the magic of drama.”

“It’s really fun! You get to control lighting, sounds and visual effects, learn how the systems work and plug into the software.”
