After an outstanding season that saw the 1st VIII finish sixth in the Championship Eights at the National Schools Regatta and reach the quarter-finals at Henley Royal Regatta, the school Boat Club is building on its success with a bold new step forward.
Thanks to the generous support of Old Bedfordian Brian Cawley (60–69), our rowers will now benefit from a transformative partnership with the Light Blue Clinic, a specialist sports performance centre based in Cambridge and closely aligned with the elite athletes of the Cambridge University Boat Club.
This collaboration brings personalised, science-backed training directly to our boys. Each week, the Performance Director from the Light Blue Clinic will lead a strength and conditioning session for our Colts and Senior boys, ensuring they start the week with expert guidance and targeted support. Senior athletes will also receive individualised training plans and take part in three cycles of fitness testing throughout the year—giving them the tools to track progress, refine technique and maximise performance.
The benefits are wide-reaching. Strength and conditioning is a cornerstone of modern rowing, helping athletes build the power, endurance and technical resilience needed to compete at the highest level. With expert input from the Light Blue Clinic, our boys will learn to generate maximum force with each stroke, maintain intensity over long distances and execute technique under fatigue—skills essential for consistent boat speed and race-day success.
Just as importantly, this programme supports injury prevention and long-term development. Rowing’s repetitive nature can lead to muscular imbalances and overuse injuries. The clinic’s balanced approach strengthens stabilising muscles, improves joint health and builds the resilience needed to withstand the demands of elite training. For younger rowers, it lays the foundation for safe progression; for seasoned athletes, it helps maintain peak condition and extend their careers.
This partnership marks a significant evolution in the Boat Club’s approach—bringing the same performance expertise that supports Cambridge’s Boat Race crews (winners of seven of the last eight men’s races and all of the women’s races in the same period) into our own programme.
With this investment in elite-level support, cutting-edge sports science and individual development, we are not just preparing our boys to compete—we are preparing them to excel.
