Dr Tom Hart (88-98), OB and Penguinologist, kindly returned to the School to give a talk about his work in the Antarctic. Ranging from scraps with sea lions to satellite surveillance, the lecture presented a myriad of beautiful anecdotes and images, as well addressing the harsh, uncensored truth about bureaucracy and governmental interference in the Antarctic, the potential destruction of the ecosystem by industrial krill fishing and, happily, his team’s growing success in establishing vast marine protectorates. Developing a deeper understanding of penguins and their unique environment is not usually possible within the national science curriculum, so having this world-renowned expert share his knowledge was a genuine privilege.
