ISGA National Finals Report

A cold blustery practice day on Saturday was very successful and helped us to put in a very strong performance around the demanding and tight links course at Fairmont St Andrews on Sunday in Round 1.
The Torrance course at Fairmont measuring the best part of 7000 yards proved a strong test. However, a Level Par 72 from myself and a 74 (+2) from Fourth Form Harry Brown (his best ever gross score!) placed us in an excellent 2nd place, behind Wellington, out of the 20 qualifying Independent Schools. Hundreds entered the regional knockout stages this year.
Round 2 on Monday was around the Eden Course at St Andrews. The Eden is argued to be as good as, if not better than the old course. Conditions were brutal to say the least. 45 mph gusts made scoring incredibly difficult and despite struggling around Fairmont the previous day, Fifth Form Rob Holden shot an impressive 83 which was one the better scores out of all 60 competitors – only a handful of boys from the whole field managed to shoot in the 70s. Some bunker trouble on the 2nd hole for Harry resulted in him posting an 86 (still a very reasonable score given the conditions). I battled hard all round but some poor decision making and a few loose shots on the back 9, despite a closing birdie, meant I carded an 81. The conditions were probably some of the toughest conditions I've ever played in or seen for R2. In all honestly I think I played better for my 81 than my 72!
I finished in 9th place, Harry 24th and Rob 43rd individually in a strong field. The team finished in 8th place out of the 20 schools.
It was a great learning experience and a super few days at a brilliant location.
The team’s next golf fixture is the regional Final of the HMC foursomes on 3rd May 2016. A win here would secure their place at the National Finals on the 8th and 9th July.
