In what has been a thrilling couple of weeks of hockey, we have been delighted to see our U11 and U13 VII hockey teams going from strength to strength.

On Friday 28 February, it was the turn of our U13 boys to make their bid for the IAPS National Finals on their home turf. They welcomed over 200 boys from 22 prep schools at the Gordon Field. The weather conditions were appalling: grey, very wet and cold! However, all the teams were undeterred and entered into the competition with great enthusiasm.

Our 1st VII got off to a superb start by winning all of their group games and only conceding a single goal. They then stormed through to the finals after 1-0 wins against both Culford School and Foremarke Hall in the quarter-finals and semi-finals. The final saw two great hockey teams come face to face: Bedford Prep and St Faith’s. The brilliant game that ensued was evenly-matched and great to watch. When the final whistle blew the score was tied at 0-0, so it was down to penalty strokes to decide the winner. A special mention must go to our goalkeeper who held his nerve under pressure and only conceded one goal, and only his second of the competition, but, unfortunately, it proved one too many and St Faith’s took the match victory. As runners up, however, Bedford Prep secured their place in the final and the chance to become the national champions.

However, there was no rest for the boys who faced a trianglar tournament the very next day. Despite a full-on day of hockey the day before, they won all three matches!

Breaking News

The U13 VII started their IAPS National Finals on Friday 6 March in style by winning four games and drawing one to top their group and secure their place in the quarter-final. But a tough match against Taunton Prep School put an early end to their dominant run.

However, to finish in the top eight schools in the country is a tremendous achievement and one of which to be proud. The boys will no doubt take all they have learned and apply it to their upcoming games, and with three weeks of the term still to go, there is still plenty more hockey to enjoy and title hopes to chase.
