Fives Courts Renovation
Bedford School is undertaking a landmark renovation of the UK’s oldest Rugby Fives courts. This project will preserve a vital piece of sporting heritage while creating a modern, accessible space for future generations of players.
Preserving History.
Inspiring the Future.
Bedford School is proud to be home to the oldest surviving Rugby Fives courts in the United Kingdom, an extraordinary legacy dating back to the mid-19th century. These courts are not just a part of our school’s story, they are a national treasure for the sport of Rugby Fives.
But time has taken its toll. The courts are in urgent need of repair and modernisation to remain safe, functional, and inspiring for today’s players and tomorrow’s champions.
Driven by a passionate group of Old Bedfordian Fives players, and with the full support of the school, we are launching a transformative renovation project.
The renovation aims to introduce glass back walls to improve visibility and spectator engagement, alongside a weatherproof viewing gallery that both protects and showcases the courts. The floors will be resurfaced and the internal walls refurbished, while upgraded ventilation and lighting will make the courts usable year-round.
These improvements will help preserve the UK’s oldest Rugby Fives courts, encourage greater participation among students and alumni, introduce the sport to younger pupils through the Prep School Games programme, and enhance the overall experience for players, spectators, and the wider school community.
This project is entirely philanthropically funded. With a lead gift of £50,000 and additional pledges already secured, we are now seeking further support to meet the expanded scope of works.
