The school archives are now located in The Galbraith building, featured in the article last week, and this week we are looking at the man who gave his name to the building, which formerly housed the Classics Department. Douglas Galbraith (1918-1995) was a Classics Teacher at the school from 1947 to 1979. He was a House Tutor of St Cuthbert’s; in the foyer of what is now St Cuthbert’s Day House, you still see a framed plaque and photo.
This article from 1995 describes his remarkable career and generosity. His legacies included the conversion of No 2 Burnaby Road, which was left to the Trust by Douglas Galbraith, into the new School Medical Centre, and a grant to digitise, repair and upgrade the organ in the Great Hall.
