From the Archives: Armistice Day 11 November 1918

The Armistice, an agreement to end the fighting of the First World War as a prelude to peace negotiations, began at 11am on 11 November 1918.

On the 27 November 1918, The Ousel reported that ‘The news that Germany had signed the Armistice at 5 a.m. on Monday, November 11th, and that hostilities would cease at 11 a.m. on that day, became generally known in the School about midday, and by the end of morning school the flags were flying from the School and Chapel towers. On Tuesday, November 12th, after the School had been summoned into the Great Hall at the end of a shortened first period, the Headmaster announced that the glorious occasion would be celebrated by a holiday for the rest of the day. He then exhorted the whole School before starting their holiday to repair to the School Chapel, and to give thanks to Almighty God for the victory of the Allied Arms’

The name Armistice Day was changed to Remembrance Day in 1931.
