Scholarships open up a world of opportunities to talented boys who may otherwise be unable to afford to attend the school and give them the best possible start in life: a Bedford education.

Currently there are 193 day boys and boarders receiving financial assistance across the Prep School and Upper School – this is 18% of all boys at the school. The amounts vary from a 10% to a 100% award, totalling in excess of £1.55m per annum.

The financial support helps both boys who would not be able to come to Bedford School and those who show great academic, musical or sporting potential. The funds in simple terms either come from the Harpur Trust, or the Bedford School Trust (BST). Donations for scholarships and bursaries to the Bedford School Foundation are transferred into the BST for distribution. The Head Master recommends on all awards, via the Scholarship Committee which includes Trustees from both Trusts, in line with the different criteria and restrictions of the Harpur Trust and BST.

The school was informed that the late Brian Saville (40-48), who died in August 2013 after a long illness, has left a residue of his estate to Bedford School Foundation, in excess of £6,500,000. We were humbled that Brian should leave such a considerable sum and Trustees were very mindful of the responsibility to use it as he would have wished. Little did we know that we would stand to benefit in the way that we have, and it is wonderful to be able to use the legacy.

The scale of the legacy ensures that the benefit can be spread beyond one project, including the Brian Saville Scholarship Fund. The priority is to ensure that as many as possible, both now and in the future, become recipients of Brian’s generosity.

The Foundation continues to raise funds to maintain the scholarship and bursary offerings.
